Morning Sickness Not Only in the Morning
Morning sickness does not just occur in the morning, it is the nausea and vomiting that some women experience with pregnancy. The morning can be when the symptoms are at their worst for some pregnant women but can lessen as the day progresses. However, while the symptoms may be worst in the morning, morning sickness can be experienced at any time and can last all day long. Generally, during their first trimester most women will experience at least some of the symptoms of nausea and sometimes vomiting.
Morning Sickness When it Begins
Nausea usually begins at around six weeks of pregnancy but may begin as early as four weeks into the pregnancy. For other woman it might take another month or two for the symptoms to ease off. For a small minority of pregnant woman unfortunately the nausea and the vomiting can continue to the end of the pregnancy. The severe morning sickness can turns into hyperemesis gracidarum. This is highly debilitating because it just goes on and on and never seems to come to an end. There is vomiting and excessive nausea. The right amounts of food and liquids are prevented from being absorbed by the excessive vomiting. Generally, women who are carrying twins or more are more likely than women carrying a single baby to suffer from morning sickness. The higher levels of estrogen, HCG or other hormones in their systems may be responsible for this. Another common theme running through women likely to suffer morning sickness during pregnancy are women who also have a history of vomiting or nausea after taking birth control pills. This is due to the body’s response to estrogen.
An additional factor might be genetics which might be adding to why some women experience more intense and extensive morning sickness symptoms than other women. Often, it does run seem to run in the family with mothers or sister having experienced severe morning sickness then it is more than likely this category of women will too. There has been one study where it was found that there was 50 percent more likelihood of women being ill with morning sickness during their pregnancy if they were carrying a girl.
Morning Sickness and Miscarriages
One aspect of the morning sickness issue is that women are less likely to suffer morning sickness if they are more likely to have a miscarriage. This is because there are lower levels of pregnancy hormones in the pregnant woman who has placenta or a baby that is not developing properly. With less pregnancy hormones there is a lower level of nausea.
Morning sickness can be eased in a multitude of ways. It often helps to change eating habits by eating smaller meals more frequently during the day. Try to avoid having a completely full or completely empty stomach. Another thing a woman suffering from the morning sickness nausea can do is to make sure they get plenty of rest. Avoiding smells and foods that would aggravate their nausea will also help. Acupressure or motion sickness bands have also been used with some success and are worth considering.
