There are many different ways to do relaxation techniques. Firstly, the individual needs to feel their shoulders relax when they sense a panic attack beginning. The person can the then learn how to relieve the tension within the neck, by being aware of it. The goal is to reach total body relaxation by progressing through the rest of the body’s muscles and relaxing each muscle in turn. Slowing down that person’s breathing is a critical step in relaxation. It is physically impossible to keep your muscles relaxed while your heart is racing and you are breathing so rapidly since they are so contradictory. The person needs to bring everything back into synchronisation by forcing a slow blowing out through their mouth, a controlled release of air so to speak, so as to slow the breathing. The slowed breathing will then help with the heart and the sweating and sometimes the tears that just roll uncontrollably down the persons face. The person also needs to understand and to constantly remind themselves that they are not going crazy and is highly unlikely that they are going to die this day.
